*Please do your home work!!! This is not the dog for everyone they are a strong headed breed that will do what they want. They tend to drool, chew, and are expensive. Large dogs medication goes by weight this will add up. Medical bills may be horrific. Please have a plan know why you want a Mastino. What do you intend to do with it show, pet, or you want the biggest bad est dog? THIS IS NOT THE CASE with the Mastino. This attitude will end in heart break for the dog. Be honest with your self about owning this fantastic breed.
Health
* Cherry Eye= This is a common problem when the third eyelid becomes inflamed and pops out the conner of the eye, It is very common with the young pups and has happend to adults as well. Cherry Eye is not painful if you see it try to put eye ointment on it to keep it lubricated also make sure you clean the eye as well. Wait for the second one ( a week or two) to pop out If it does happen contact your vet. Demand that it must be removed not tacked down. I promise you it will pop out again. If you vet will not due it find a new vet. Also the price is a issue as well don't pay $500. Shop around you will find a vet that will do it for cheaper trust me i did. It is not known what cause Cherry Eye some say it is stress the truth is no one knows.
*Hips= Mastino hips are very loose don't freak out right away when you vet tells you your dog is dysphasia. Get another opinion try to take the X-rays so you will not be charged again for a X-ray. Hip dysphasia is a result of the abnormal development of the hip joint which is genetic. Signs of problems are limping, and bunny hopping. A dog with these signs should not be bred until it is proving that it is not Hip Dysphasia. It seems this problem is become very common with the Mastino. Breeders need to step up to solve this growing problem. Ask the breeder if hips are tested OFA's are ok but prefer Penn testing if possible.
